It's in keeping with St Andrew's Church's association with the Arts and Crafts Movement that there should be a small mouse carved into an item of the building's furniture.
Robert Thompson (7 May 1876 – 8 December 1955) was a British furniture maker who lived in the village of Kilburn, North Yorkshire. It was there where he established his business of manufacturing oak furniture and which featured a trademark carved mouse on many of the pieces produced.
'Mousey Thompson' as he became known, was part of the 1920s revival of craftsmanship, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement led by William Morris, John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle.
His business is still in Kilburn, now being run by his descendeants and they even trade partly under the name of 'The Mouseman of Kilburn'!
In St Andrew's Church, you'll find the 'mouse' on the font cover.
