W-CHESS Broadcast The Firt Live World Chess Championship in Virtual Reality To Mobile Handsets Throughout the World
November 11 2003--This major event, although sanctioned by the International Computer Games Association (ICGA) and the United States Chess Federation (USCF), is still considered as the first official world chess championship in virtual reality by chess fans throughout the world.
For the "Man vs. Machine" match, Kasparov is wearing 3D glasses, voice-activates the chess pieces and uses a joystick to rotate the virtual board in the air. The chessboard will be suspended in the air on a screen in front of him. Future? Not at all!
The chess player from Moscow is ready to compete against a computer program called the X3D Fritz. The four-game match is scheduled for Nov. 11, 13, 16 and 18, at 1 p.m. The games will be televised live on ESPN2 and can be followed on the Web site of the sponsor, Manhattan-based X3D Technologies (X3D.com).
In addition the matches will be live covered by W-CHESS (w-chess.com), the mobile enabled chess service provided by Mobile Excellence (m-excel.com), throughout its fast growing distribution channels in Europe.
'All our subscribers in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Germany will now be able to follow the games when thery are not behind a TV or PC. This new channel is the future for the global chess community' according to Martin Smink, VP of business development and strategy of Mobile Excellence, 'You don't have to be a rocket scientist to predict that the internet chess platforms will soon be merged with mobile distribution channels. Our DOJA and MIDP chess suite powered by GPRS offering person-2-person chess, person-2-machine chess, chess puzzles and chess news, is designed to plug and play with the larger Internet based chess portals'.
'This initiative had not been possible without the co-operation between X3D Technologies (X3D.com), The American Foundation for Chess (af4c.org), Chessbase (chessbase.com), AT&T wireless and annotators such as the Dutch grandmaster Harmen Jonkman reporting about each game on w-chess.net in multiple languages' said Hans van Briemen, CEO of Mobile Excellence.'I am very interested in the acceptance level of these kind of services in the US, we are certainly ready for it'.
